Manyana Dreaming

With the little bit of bite in the night air becoming a more common occurrence as we plunge into Winter I can't help but to long for the south coast. There is something truly invigorating about a fresh surf, something rousing about hunting for perfection and something calming about getting away from the crowds. It's Friday and it's a shame I'm not packing into the blue Ford or Peacocks MPV with an air of anticipation and an expectation of bad sleep and good times. Anyway I feel like I need to do a Farm, Boneyard, Werri, Summercloud, Manyana, Mollymook, Dolphin Point, Bawley Combo.

Interesting Bee Fact - Six

Napoleon used the bee as a symbol of his empire after his coronation in 1804. It stood for industry, efficiency and productivity. Also emblematic of immortality and resurrection, the bee was chosen to link the new dynasty to the very origins of France. Golden bees (cicadas really) were discovered in 1653 in Tournai in the tomb of Childeric I (father of Clovis) who founded the Merovingian dynasty in 457. They were considered to be the oldest emblem of the sovereigns of France.

Interesting Bee Fact - Five

Honey is the only product with no shelf life. No need to refrigerate it. It can be stored unopened at room temperature in a dry cupboard. Honey is one of the oldest foods in existence. It was even found in the tomb of King Tut! It was still eatable.

I Love Insurance

How much does insurance suck, especially at renewal time. I normally hate insurance and at work I see a plethora of people from all walks of life that believe insurance is nothing more than a scam. I can't help starting to feel like maybe I shouldn't be making people pay for insurance. Maybe I believe it's the right thing for them because I make a juicy margin on it. Today my faith in insurance was restored.

I parked my car in the Mall car park at 8.00. I got out of my car as pre normal. the car park has a decent slope but when I got out of my car it didn't roll (because I had the hand break on, good job Evan). I walked to work. I didn't notice any loud bangs. Nothing out of the norm... Until I went back to find my car 100 meters away smashed into a wall. No security video, no nothing, just a smashed car. Anyway I noticed a strange insurance euphoria brought on by the initial distress of finding my car wrecked followed by the joy of realising that insurance has saved me again.

Results 1 - 10 of 75,100,000 for bird flu

I have an ongoing debate with Nat about the legitimacy of Avian Bird Flu. Maybe it's my love of chicken or my brush with the dreaded SARS both physically (see photo or SARS buskers) and professionally but I'm adamant avian flu isn't going to kill 1/3 of the worlds population.

I know that there are plenty of reasons to be concerned. National Geographic had a cool article about migration corridors and let me tell you people, if you think you a long way from Guandong province (Chinese just north of Vietnam) the home of many dodgy nasties such as SARS and potentially Bird Flu, then you are well wrong. For the shocking truth check out http://www.fao.org/ag/againfo/foto/EMPRES_Watch_global_flyways.gif

So yes it's possible, we could have a pandemic and all be in serious trouble. Is it probable? Is this something we should be worried about? Is the time bomb ticking? Will we get thrust back into the dark ages. If so I bags a spot on kangs yacht. 5 days and we are out of harms way on Lord Howe. I suggest you start planning your escape.

Interesting Bee Fact - Four

In 1973, Karl von FRISCH received a Nobel Prize for deciphering Bee language, which consists of two basic dances: a dance in a circle, for indicating sources without reference to specific distance or direction; and a tail-wagging dance in which the exact distance is indicated by a number of straight runs with abdominal wagging--the fewer runs per minute, the farther away the source.
